MWRD is celebrating Infrastructure Week. This Saturday, May 13 there are open houses at our North Area treatment plants. Next Saturday, May 20th open houses will be at Stickney and Calumet. The event is from 10am – 2pm. Tours and activities will be at each location. Stop by for some milkweed seeds, Oak saplings, or just to learn something new!
Pilot Demonstration
PhD student, Emma Shapiro (working under Dr. Aaron Packman), presented her research at the O’Brien WRP open house on Saturday May 13th.
- Emma’s research is focused on the removal of PFAS and other trace organic contaminants from municipal wastewater using a novel polymer adsorbent developed in the Dichtel Lab at Northwestern. She is initiating a pilot study on-site at O’Brien beginning this summer.
- The open house welcomed hundreds of local residents/members of the public
- Visitors were interested and engaged in the topic, asking many questions. The research was received well – the visitors were happy to see the district working on an issue that has been so prevalent in the news.
